National Restaurant Menu Labeling Legislation: What it Means for Dietetics Practitioners

The May 2011 Journal of the American Dietetic Association reprint supplement, “National Restaurant Menu Labeling Legislation: What it Means for Dietetics Practitioners” collects all of the Journal’s recent articles examining this important issue. The articles explore menu labeling issues from research, policy, and practice perspectives, including research on consumer behavior related to restaurant and food labeling, considerations for selecting nutrient analysis software, ensuring accuracy in nutrition information analysis through culinary expertise, examples of community health promotion programs that incorporate restaurant menu labeling, and helping consumers understand the uses and limitations of nutrient labeling.

Video: Watch firsthand as investigators from the University of Minnesota used a computer equipped with an eye-tracking device to determine that most consumers pay less attention to Nutrition Facts labels than they report. Further data suggest that average consumers view label components at the top more than those at the bottom and read only the top five lines on a Nutrition Facts label. Prominently positioning key nutrients, and labels themselves, could substantially impact public health.
